III  Meditation # 1:  What feelings are evoked in you when hearing the temptation of Jesus passage?   How are the three temptations similar? Different?   How has the Infancy Narrative-- especially Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), Zechariahs’ Benedictus (Luke 1:67-79) and the preaching of John the Baptist (Luke 3: 7-14)-- prepared us for Jesus’ response to the temptations?  What are our greatest temptations today?  How may these passages help us?

V    Meditation # 2: What feelings are evoked in hearing about Jesus’ rejection at Nazareth? (Luke 4: 14-30) How may Jesus’ temptations (Luke 4: 1-13) and this rejection be linked thematically and spiritually? How do you relate to the fact that Jesus did not address the angry worshippers but rather “passed through the midst of them and went away”?

VII Congregation Song:  Is This A Day Of New Beginnings?      Please Stand.

Is this a day of new beginnings, time to remember and move on,

Time to believe what love is bringing, laying to rest the pain that’s gone?

How can the seasons of a planet mindlessly spinning ‘round its sun

With just a human name and number say that some new thing has begun?

Yet thro’ the life and death of Jesus, love’s mighty Spirit, now, as then,

Can make for us a world of diff’rence as faith and hope are born again.

Then let us with the Spirit’s daring, step from the past and leave behind

Its disappointment, guilt, and grieving, seeking new paths,

and sure to find.

So let us gather ‘round the table to taste and share what love can do.

This is a day of new beginnings—Our God is making all things new!

VIII Meditation # 3: What “old ways,” attitudes, and expectations about church tradition, the faith journey and family life are part of your faith journey’s struggle? What “old ways of thinking,”  “old attitudes” or “old

fears” continue to impact your life in negative ways? What “old ways” are helpful?

XIV Congregation Song # 3:  Eye Has Not Seen by Marty Haugen PLEASE STAND

Refrain: Eye has not seen, ear has not heard

          What God has ready for those who love him;

Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus,

Teach us the wisdom of God.

Verse 1: When pain and sorrow weigh us down, be near to us, O Lord,

Forgive the weakness of our faith,

And bear us up within your peaceful word.     Refrain

Verse 2: Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade,

Yet all our days are in your hands,

So we return in love what love has made.   Refrain

Verse 3:  To those who see with eyes of faith, the Lord is ever near,

Reflected in the faces of all the poor and lowly of the world.

                                           Refrain.

XV   Meditation # 5:  How and when do our expectations-of God, of faith, of others prevent us from seeing and experiencing Christ?  Do we ever find ourselves critical of God and angry over wrongs and hurts we experience?

Explore these thoughts & feelings and write your own prayer in response to

them.
